There are many reasons why stress is bad for the body and mind; it can make you sick, ruin productivity, and expedite aging. National Stress Awareness Month is a great opportunity for us at EMS Solutions to come up with small ways to keep the office environment stress-free and productive.

1. Laughter (The Best Medicine)

laughing

Among the easiest and most inexpensive ways to relieve stress is to laugh. According to a study published in the American Journal of Medical Sciences in 1989, mirthful, or carefree laughter, has been associated with reduced pressure. The world-famous Mayo Clinic even goes so far as to report that laughter promotes the release of endorphins, or “feel good” chemicals, in the brain.

2. Be a Green Thumb

According to various studies, one of the best ways for beating stress is to tend your garden. That’s right; after a hard day’s work, start planting, and raising flowers and plants.

Gardening allows the individual to relax, sit back, and enjoy nature. So simple. So effective.

3. Read

An article published in the British Newspaper, “The Telegraph” reports people who spend just six minutes reading a book before bed effectively de-stress more than those who go directly to sleep. Reading was noted to help relax muscles and slow down the heart beat.

In addition to reading a book, listening to music, taking a walk, or drinking tea have also been reported to reduce stress levels. And remember, many of these concepts can be applied at the office, too. During your next break take a step outside of your workplace building and enjoy the fresh air as you walk around the grounds. Maybe you can grab a tea from the local coffee shop on your stroll?
